"O" for obesity facts (Taken from both sources)
Obesity has many long term consequences that can sometimes lead to death
Overeating regularly can lead to obesity
Obesity is considered a chronic long term disease
Obesity is a leading cause of high blood pressure, heart disorder and diabetes
One out of four kids are obese, one out of three kids are obese.
Our employment jobs, require little to no physical activity
Our weight increases when we eat more calories than needed
Once we develop a fat cell, and try to lose weight, the size of the fat cell increases; although the number of cells does not
Obesity is hard to treat, and the people who lose weight, tend to gain the weight all over again in five years.
Overeating because of depression, hopelessness, anger, boredom, isn’t a great idea because they all have nothing to do with hunger
Why I chose obesity
![Picture](/uploads/2/3/8/1/23811068/5092937.png)
The reason I chose to research this topic is because obesity is a leading cause of many deaths in the United States. It actually has doubled in the past three years (Obesity Facts). I myself come from a background and most of my family members run on the “over the scale” side. One specific person I’d like to point out is my cousin Dulce. She isn’t necessarily obese but she’s gained and lost a lot of weight since she recently graduated high school. It’s an up and down scale that never stays sustainable. What happened was that after she realized her weight was increasing scarcely, she took initiative and started to lose weight. When she began to lose weight she got to a point where she thought she was done losing weight and she thought that she’d never get fat again. What happened was that later on she began to gain a lot of weight all over again. The problem was that when she began to gain weight right after high school, she created a fat cell. Fat cells are always in the process of making more (Obesity). When Dulce constantly overeat, the fat cell grew to about three or four times its size. So later on when she tried to lose weight she didn’t get rid of those fat cells, the size of them just decreased. So when she thought she was done, there were still more fat cells in her (Mayo Clinic); and so by not paying attention to her body anymore, she began to gain weight again. In the end she realized where she went wrong in her process but she managed to fix this. She made better choices when she ate, and she began to play sports again. She told me that a lot of her friends were really shocked at how much weight she’d lost and that influenced them to begin to take better care of themselves as well.
The problem is that she was missing a lot of the key elements that I was arguing in the beginning. Not just her, but many individuals that have a mind set about losing weight have the enthusiasm but not he knowledge. They miss a lot of key elements needed to keep, make, and sustain a healthy life style.
Wait! so there's science behind all this?
Yes! Everyone has fat cells in their body. Regardless if your overweight or not. If you eat uncontrollably, they will continue to grow but if you manage what you eat then your fat cells will remain the same (Obesity). Just like in Dulce’s story. A study showed that obese people have a problem in the gene that codes for the hormone “leptin”, which regulate appetite (Obesity). So it is also said that obesity can be passed on through genes. Some people that struggle with obesity also have a missing enzyme called “PCI.” Since they don’t have it, they are unable to make PMOC. The effect is that without is, they aren’t able to respond to the hormone leptin, and also they can’t control appetite as much (Obesity).
So what?
![Picture](/uploads/2/3/8/1/23811068/7590028.png)
It’s important to act now because obesity is growing exponentially and it is a huge problem all over the world. One out of four grownups has obesity, and one out of three kids has obesity (Alliance for a Healthier Generation). There’s definitely no limit to what the consequences are for someone who had obesity. Its exponential growth can be stopped but first it needs to be addressed. If it’s not stopped, it’s definitely not going to decay; it’s just going to keep growing more and more. As evident in my cousin’s story, one person when one person begins to make healthier life style changes and the results are drastic, other people are influenced to do the same thing. YOU might be the next person to influence another and domino effect moves all around, we can definitely stop the exponential growth in obesity.
what I can and will do to help this issue
![Picture](/uploads/2/3/8/1/23811068/3608008.jpg)
I’ve already began helping! I’m already informing people by explaining everything I can. This website isn’t the only way I can inform people about this horrible problem. I can pass down information through family and friends. Not just that, but I’m willing to change MY life style to improve my health and maybe even lose a couple pounds. By doing so, I can influence others around me to do so as well. My hope is that they too will want to make better choices in what they eat and do; and hopefully take big steps into living a better and healthier life.
The process of living a healthier life style and losing weight can bring many challenges and you may find obstacles in your way. I created “when you” cards. Whenever you feel a certain way or come across some obstacles, read the card and hopefully this not only reminds you why being healthy is important, but helps you by motivating you and by influencing you to make right choices. Not just that, but it provides you with doable changes that are totally possible if you stay committed.
When you..
Need Motivation
Weigh yourself and chart it. Every morning when you wake up weigh yourself and put in on a calendar to keep track of your weight loss or maybe even gain. Doing this can be useful as feedback for yourself. By looking at what you did a certain week and how it affected you weight, you can see what you’re doing good and not so good. Seeing your weight go down can definitely motivate you to keep going.
When you..
Don’t have anything to do!
Don’t just sit around, eat, and watch TV. Go outside for a walk. Go out and play a sport. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day! It’s not just necessary for your body but it comes with plenty benefits. Exercise helps combat heart and health conditions, and it gives you plenty of energy. Especially if the first thing you do in the morning is exercise. So go out and be active!
When you..
Feel sad because you only lost a pound!
That’s one less pound than you had before! Loosing at least a pound means you’re headed the right direction. Did you know that when a person does something over and over again, it becomes easier for them to do it(Obesity Facts)? If you keep it up, your body with gain more strength and soon it wont be that hard to lose weight. SO don’t stop! Keep it going even if it’s only one pound at a time!
When you ..
Want to take it to the next level
Plan your meals. First figure out how many calories your body needs in a day. For example, if yours is 2,000 calories a week, you could fit about 400 calories per meal for 4 meals a day and add two 200 calorie snacks in between the meals. It might be difficult at first but try and stick to the meal plans. It brings benefits as big as a pound of weight lost in about a week! But you have to be committed to it.
When you..
Begin to think short term
Sorry but it’s really a long term thing. Don’t think you are going to lose weight overnight. It doesn’t happen that way. Thinking like this and not getting the results you want can lead to depression and other problems. Often enough problems like these cause you to eat more and that can result in the complete opposite of what you want and what you’re striving for.
When you..
Begin to think about drinking calories
Soda, coffee, tea, alcohol, juice and other beverages have a ton of extra calories that you do not need. Instead, drink water. Lots of it, all day long. Every day! If you haven’t noticed, water makes you full, without giving you calories. It’s a perfect weight lost drink that everyone has available! So from now on instead of drinking juice for every meal, cut it down to once a meal and from there on out just drink water.
When you..
Feel alone
You aren’t the only person who’s trying to lose weight. There are plenty other people with a desire to lose weight but need motivation to lose it. Find a weight loss buddy. Studies found that online weight loss buddies help you keep weight off, and help you lose weight. It motivated both of you to keep going your weight loss goal.
When you..
Don’t know how this would benefit you
Living a healthy life style won’t only decrease your chances of obesity, but will also decrease your chances of getting high blood pressure, heart disorder and diabetes. Obesity causes diabetes due to the excessive amount of sugar in the food eaten. This causes your pancreas to have a resistance of insulin. In other words, your body cannot control your sugar levels (E Medicine Help). Eating healthy will help you get the right balance and portions of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that your body needs. Exercising can help you feel your best and give you a lot of energy. It even helps you deal with stress better (E Medicine Help). Eating healthy is one of the best things you can do to prevent any death causing sickness. It benefits you in plenty ways.

here's the positive effect you'll get
![Picture](/uploads/2/3/8/1/23811068/4709378.png)
If you make these changes that I proposed you will see a huge positive effect on your health. Even though it is possible for you to do everything I proposed in these cards, choose two or three that you feel you can accomplish; just to get you started. Whether it’s prepping meals, finding a weightless buddy, or exercising 30 minutes a day, it’s still a pledge you’re making to yourself. It’s not just any pledge you’re making, you’re also benefitting yourself by making better life style choices. What I’m in other words proposing is that you adjust your lifestyle, and you’re eating habits so that they help you live a longer and healthier life. Also, you wont run the risk of getting those scary and deadly sicknesses that others get. This will also increase your life time drastically because you will not be as vulnerable to health problems (Obesity facts). This is something that will not change overnight, however if we get a lot of people to commit to at least one of the above changes, we can help decay the exponential growth that obesity has, and influence others to make these positive changes as well.
MAKE THE PLEDGE! JUST THREE EASY STEPS!
Print out the pledge, highlight all options you’re willing to do and sign it.
Hang it around EVERYWHERE to not only remind yourself about your pledge, but to encourage others. Raise awareness.
Last but not least! Stay committed!

Each and every person can contribute by pledging to stay healthy. Put your part in turning the exponential graph upside down! Get Healthy! Get Active! Influence others around you to make better choices! Make a difference in our world! Most importantly, live a happy, healthy, life.
